Does a road traffic safety management system provide a competitive advantage? Yes, it is likely an advantage to meet the transport buyers’ requirements for active road safety work. After all, who wouldn’t want school transport, special transport services, public buses, taxis, freight transport, and passenger traffic to be carried out safely by companies and organizations that systematically prevent and reduce accidents in road traffic?
The road traffic safety work is based on the “Vision Zero” – that no one should be killed or seriously injured in traffic (see the Swedish Transport Administration). In 2009, the Swedish Parliament decided on a new interim target, stating that the number of fatalities should be halved by the year 2020.
Road traffic safety is also a global concern. Estimates show that 1.3 million people die and between 20–50 million are injured worldwide every year. The impact on human health and on the global economy is highly significant.
ISO 39001 is an international standard for road traffic safety management. The standard can be seen as a complement to existing legislation in the field, with the goal of achieving a safer traffic environment.

The management system according to ISO 39001 covers everything from the organization’s understanding of traffic safety, leadership, attitudes, and competence issues to factors such as vehicle maintenance, planning, and corrective actions.
ISO 39001 follows the new common framework for management system standards – the so-called “High Level Structure”. This means it can easily be integrated with existing management systems according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
